I began as a composer, trying to write music that is original, and yet meaningful to the widest possible audience. Over time, it has become clear to me that, modern life being what it is, people rarely listen to music anymore as an activity in and of itself; music seems to matter only as an accompaniment to some other activity or medium. Thus, I made the logical progression into commercial music, which is essentially accompaniment to visuals. However, a few years of that convinced me that writing commercial music is ultimately very limiting and unsatisfying. Producers seem interested only in a very narrow, "stock" palette of music genres. So, now I’m a filmmaker. I’m taking responsibility for the visuals myself. I can once again write whatever music I want. And, there’s the added dimensions of storytelling and "making a point". It’s my own little, self-indulgent kind of opera - but with distribution on a grand Internet scale! With this particular video, rather than "score to picture", I’ve "pictured to score" - editing film to fit a piece of mine entitled Synthonic Sketches #1. I am indebted to the Prelinger Archives - public domain films found at http://www.archive.org/details/prelinger. What a great source they are for some historical perspective on life in the U.S. during the mid-20th century. Finally, what a beautiful and talented lady Yvonne DeCarlo was! |
