Barrelhouse piano - as only the modern-day player piano (i.e. computer with sequencer) can do it - with a tip of the hat to Conlon Nancarrow, one of the few true originals of the 20th Century. (Note: although I consider this to be "concert" music rather than true "commercial" music, the truth is that a portion of this is in fact published by Wild Whirled Music, and so I've "defaced" the audio with dropouts to discourage unauthorized use.)
Piano Miniatures
Present musical materials in a short introduction, then develop them - that's the method at work in this series of four miniature sonatas for piano. The first miniature is unavoidably Bartokian. The second is comprised of three short variations, starting with high-register chords, and gradually progressing to short, low-register outbursts. The third miniature is entitled "In the manner of a jazz 'after hours' solo." Imagine your favorite jazz pianist playing just for him/herself in some smoky cafe during the wee hours, after everyone else has gone home. Now remove your favorite jazz pianist, insert Arnold Schoenberg instead, and...voilà! He swings! (well, sort of...). I was thinking of Ives in the fourth miniature, although I suppose there's nothing particularly Ivesian about it except perhaps a somewhat iconoclastic spirit.
